Property 5 Bedroom, 4 Storey mid-19th century house in London.

This was a typical early victorian house with plenty of original features including decorative plaster cornices, dado rails, tiled entrance hall and a large stairwell with a wide staircase.

Brief The house hadn't been decorated for some time and the owners were considering moving home.

However with a new baby due in less than 6 months they decided to redecorate the house and replace most of the furniture. Both were busy professionals and so called us in to create a design and manage the project to completion.

Our client wanted a more grown up sophisticated look throughout this family house; clean lines but with warmth and comfort, using some texture and colour. The bedrooms needed simple but stylish furniture. It had to be practical with 2 young children in the house. They wanted their little girl’s bedroom to have a slightly nostalgic feel and “not too pink”.

At the beginning we had a lengthy discussion with the client about her likes, dislikes and vision for the overall look. Together we studied pictures from books and magazines, which helped. While the client was busy at work, we researched many different furnishings, lights, rugs, wallpapers and paint colours.

At each meeting we discussed the options (using mood boards) and whittled them down to the clients favourites. At the same time we ensured a consistent look. Overall we saved her weeks of effort, as well as suggesting things that she would never have considered, but loved.

The design for the living-dining room was for more modern furniture with some texture. The seating is practical leather, with simple, classic shapes. A cow skin rug adored by the client, beautiful glass pendant lights and elegant dining furniture completed the look.

For the bedrooms, the client chose wallpaper for the walls behind each bed, adding a little colour and life to each room. The rest was kept very simple. The master bed room became very inviting with mossy greens and small amounts of rich reds, making it feel like a luxury hotel room.

There is colour, texture and above all, warmth and comfort in each room. The result was a very happy family who admitted that they previously tried to escape from the house as much as possible.

Now they love being at home all the time…and that’s what makes our job worthwhile.
Contractors

The works for the project required co-ordination across a range of trades and contractors. Prior to starting any work we wrote a full set of work instructions to ensure that no detail was left out. This also makes sure that work estimates are very accurate.

The contractors involved included :-
  • Floor Restoration Specialists
  • Decoration
  • Plasterers
  • Electrician
  • Carpet Fitters
  • Furniture and curtain installation
  • Cabinet makers
  • Furniture disposal
Each of the contractors was asked to provide a detailed quote, timeframe for their works, insurance certificates and references.

We developed a schedule for each of the contractors to come in and undertake the work as specified. We monitored the works with frequent site visits relieving our clients of the stress of managing tradepersons. At the end of the works we made sure that the client was happy with everything and that any minor problems (snagging) were corrected.

Furniture Ordering and Installation

While the works were progressing we ordered all the furniture, lighting and accessories. We ordered and took delivery of 79 separate items from 28 different suppliers. All orders were planned so that long leadtime items were ordered first.

All the furniture was delivered to a warehouse so when the works were completed we were ready to install everything in a short space of time

When the works were complete, and over the course of two days, we delivered, unwrapped and installed all furniture and accessories. During this time we furnished the living & dining rooms, entrance hall and 5 bedrooms. The last piece of furniture was installed at 4pm on the day the baby was born.
